AGONIZER is a Power Metal dating to 1998 and hailing from Pyhäjärvi. With Olli Solitanner handling lead vocals the band cut an opening demo entitled 'Eternal Night', followed by a second session 'Last Sign Of Light' in 1999. Pasi Kärkkäinen took over the role of frontman for the 'Lord Of Lies' set.

Finland is really a top nation in music these days – now, who would have guessed this back in 1985? Here’s AGONIZER, a strong 6-piece with a brand new CD entitled “Birth / The End”. The surprise me with a very melodic production, and also with the nice gesture of letting the keyboards be such a strong part of the sound. They’re in the mixed zone of power metal and progressive metal, and in songs like “Harmless Hero” they’re absolutely quite close to DREAM THEATER in their prime days. This CD has more variations in style, though, with both pure power metal parts and more epical hints. Epic metal is what I wrote when I heard the song “Hazardous” which is a very strong song. The only thing that bugs me a bit is the lead vocalist, Pasi Kärkkäinen. His voice is rather screamy at times and it kind of feels strange to the very melodic picture they paint here. I’m not saying he’s bad, so it’s merely a matter of taste I guess. Many fans of progressive metal as well as power metal will like this CD. Try “Black Sun” and you have a song that is a pure mix of METALLICA and HAMMERFALL, for example. Very good quality, all in all.
