The steadier bass pattern of "Pressure" dip closer to commercialized fare, but an appearance from hip hop heavyweight Diamond D should quickly silence criticism. Just Blaze adds a more genuinely mainstream clap on "Get Back," one of the few club-worthy jams on the disc.

While production is consistently above average, MED's flow often sounds labored. Still, his lyricism makes the difference, spitting smart no-nonsense commentaries like the J. Dilla produced "So Real" - "Cowards is testing my cool by the hour/ gets worse, turf wars, scars with grudges." Even on the occasional verbal misstep, the top-notch mix of production rolls on to preserve the engaging resonance.

[music.ign.com]use-type theme, while more variety is introduced with numbers like the minimal "Listen to the Fog" and the pop-funk of "Get Down". This compilation proves there is life for this type of music beyond the clubs. Hard to resist the beats on these tracks.w directions, with mixed results. The title track and "On the Sly" both offer great rides on sly basslines, swinging effortlessly between spy-movie menace and soul-brother strut (there's even a little Latin rock thrown in "Scorpio Rising" courtesy of Rob Myers, who provides great, versatile guitar work throughout the whole album). "Vibrations" combines elements of trip-hop and nu-school breaks with Eastern-flavored flutes and chimes. "Solar" is an interesting but innocuous blend of bossa nova and drum-and-bass beats that devolves into another Thievery knockoff, while "Vai Vai" borrows heavily from the more uptempo d&b end of the Thieves' sonic spectrum. The worst moment on Scorpio Rising has to be "Sapphire", a misguided collaboration with vocalist Johnna M., who sounds pretty good as part of the soundscape on "Vai Vai" and "Solar" but is unbearable here, pushed into the foreground singing a cheesy jazz-pop melody over a watered-down drum-and-bass groove.

Still, while not perfect, Scorpio Rising is a very solid piece of funk-infused loungetronica, and probably the best album to come out of the Eighteenth Street Lounge label since Thievery Corporation's own The Mirror Conspiracy. If the guys in Thunderball can outgrow their penchant for robbing the Thieves, and further develop their innovative combinations of old-school funk and soul with new-school breakbeats and drum-and-bass, they will become a major force in the world of electronic music.

www.popmatters.comritty funk. You'll hear the Vandermark Five's brand of danceable jazz (especially on the opener, "Sucker Punch"), but you'll also hear microtonal, itchy bass clarinet and sax skronk that's far removed from the NPR-appropriate performance put together by these guys.

The Vandermark Five make bold statements and have a great time doing it, and that comes across on their records. Meanwhile, it's hard to say whether the Cinematic Orchestra are even remotely amused by their own music. To my ears, the band plays with conviction that, regrettably, never reaches fervor. I believe musicians should be uncontrollably passionate, and use their talent to offer untranslatable insights to us cloth-eared dolts who gaze in wonder at their skills.
